ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Having lived in the US for many years, Toronto native Stephen Chu returned to his hometown to get away from ‘Trump Nation’. He is a traveler, lifelong student and foodie, unafraid to try anything, with the exception of foods that contain insects or monkeys. Chu has a passion for observing and documenting humanity’s quirks, foibles and emotions. He has zero tolerance for hateful people and he strives to realise images from his mind’s eye with a sense of both humanity and fun. A self proclaimed ‘camera ninja’, Chu journeys on planes, trains and automobiles as part of his life long adventure in photography.

 'FREE SPIRIT'

“This image comes from a trip to New York. Strolling back from Ground Zero I came upon a street corner in the Tribeca neighbourhood of lower Manhattan, that had a chain linked fence enclosing an empty space. The large paper mural on the side of a building was peeling off with environmental wear. The thoughts that came to me were about how, in general, the Arts and Culture Communities suffer economically. The fence, represented to me the bureaucratic policies that block or place communities like this one as low priority when it comes to public funding. The peeling and state of disrepair of the mural added to my negative view of the fence. Meanwhile, I became uplifted by the ballerina as an icon of freedom and grace. I walked away confident again about the resilience and freedom in art.”

I really enjoy this image as I think it speaks to a larger social commentary. Well done!
