Having lived in the US for many years, Toronto native Stephen Chu returned to his hometown to get away from ‘Trump Nation’. He is a traveler, lifelong student and foodie, unafraid to try anything, with the exception of foods that contain insects or monkeys. Chu has a passion for observing and documenting humanity’s quirks, foibles and emotions. He has zero tolerance for hateful people and he strives to realise images from his mind’s eye with a sense of both humanity and fun. A self proclaimed ‘camera ninja’, Chu journeys on planes, trains and automobiles as part of his life long adventure in photography.

“This image was taken in the Mercado San Pedro in Cusco, Peru. Peru is a wonderful place with breathtaking scenery, delicacies, and of course, beautiful people. I enjoy the experience of local culture as this bustling market amazes with new sights, sounds, tastes and smells. Yet, like any other place on earth there are those in need.

I came across an elderly woman sitting in what I can only assume is her home. The woman was draped with a large plastic apron with several large sacks of potato roots and a couple of 5 gallon pails half filled with water around her. She was peeling potatoes as I watched from a not-too-distant position. She was completely engrossed in her work. As I photographed her, I became intrigued by her hands. I crouched in and got up close. She paid no attention to me, except with a small smile.

I can only imagine the stories those fingers could tell. I imagine the years of work, happiness, and sorrow that have flowed with graceful character through those aged hands.”
